8/18/2023 0 Comments Portal turret quotesFrom here I could build something that performed the 3 main motions of the wings and gun-pods: extending, rotating side-to-side (yaw), and up & down (pitch). When I started building my Turret in CAD I used some guesstimates on height & width to give me an internal volume for the mechanisms. While the unfolding legs would be impossible to recreate mechanically, the legs and gun-pods could be tweaked a bit so that they really work. Another geometric oversight was the range of motion of the wings and guns - to swivel and cover a large portion of the playing area they actually pass through the legs. The in-game animation is too fast to actually understand how the designers intend the legs to work, but it makes enough sense for something that isn't very critical to the story or gameplay. It is fairly obvious that the kneecaps were intended to fill in that gap in the body, but this scene shows that the legs were actually intended to coil and telescope out from the body - something that could never be done in real geometry. In Portal 2 the player makes their way through a factory that builds Turrets, so we get to see a better vision of what the original designer intended. The Turrets are basically an Apple-styled lozenge made from glossy white plastic that breaks open into various moving components. The Turrets are meant to be deadly, but also delicate - hence the spindly legs which are reminiscent of the Striders and Head-crabs from Half-Life, an earlier Valve game. While the Portal games were created using the same CGI as the modern Transformers movies, the creators wanted to make a world that emphasized realistic physics, as that is the core mechanic of the game. These robots look more like a magical swirling cloud of spikes than anything hinged or mechanical. A bad example, on the other hand, is the modern Transformers reboot, where the aesthetic was driven by complex rendering software that is good at pumping out polygons. This meant that Hasbro could make working toys fairly easily - sticking to realistic toy mechanisms drove the aesthetic of the cartoon. A good example is the 1980's Transformers toy line - the transformation from vehicle to robot made sense even if the range of motion of the anthropomorphized robots were fudged to make them more human like. In videogames and movies, almost nothing is designed by an engineer and if a mechanism seems to make sense to the casual observer it's good enough. When I began thinking about the Portal Turret I knew it wouldn't be a simple conversion from a 3d object created using surface or NURBS space to solid or Parametric space. I've been using SolidWorks for the past 14 years in school and as a professional to make consumer products as an industrial designer, but every project presents new challenges. Loctite power grip pressure pack (glue) 2" & 3/4" thick pink foam insulation sheets * All photos were taken by me with an iPhone4 except for the hero shot on the blue background, which was done by the ThinkGeek staff photographer, Chris Hoyer. Aphius - This flickr page chronicles a valiant effort to make a full scale Turret with papercraft. TJ Coffey - This flickr page shows an amazing working Turret with pop-out wings and airsoft guns. Voplin props made an amazing Portal gun and every other project on their page is mind-blowing as well. His is at a different scale, uses other production methods, and contains more electronics. Citizen Snips, who started his Turret around the same time as I did, but managed to finish his in a more reasonable amount of time. I'd like to acknowledge some other builders who inspired me to this huge project: I'd guess that it weighs around 20 pounds, but it's such an odd shape that it's impossible to lift in one piece - the front legs tend to fall out. The entire model is about 48" tall at the top of the egg, with another 10" of antenna above that. This project took me a good 200 hours in my spare time after work over the course of several months and several hundred dollars worth of materials. The Turret proved to be a special challenge since it's so spindly and transforms in ways that leave no room for internal mechanisms. I had access to some behind the scenes assets, but they weren't nearly as helpful as you'd think - carefully examining screen-captures is best. When I made this my company, ThinkGeek, was working with Valve to develop a number of licensed products and toys related to the two Portal videogames, so I was already taking a close look at how to recreate these virtual objects in the real world, just not at such an ambitious scale. It turned into a far more involved project than I expected, so be warned: this project is not for the faint of heart. This instructable is a walk-through of how I made my life-sized Turret from the videogame Portal.

"When red and yellow combine to create orange," she adds, "there is an activation of creativity and energy through this color."Īccording to master energy healer author of over 30 books (including her latest, Energy Work for the Everyday to Elite Athlete) Cyndi Dale, orange reflects creativity and enthusiasm, "and the ability to turn any emotion, situation, or perception and form something new and exciting out of it." "The color orange is made of two primary colors: red, which is often associated with passion and power, as well as yellow, which is often associated with joy and confidence," explains Ilona Pamplona, life coach and author of This Journal Is Your Mood Ring. Orange is also often associated with fall when the leaves change colors, pumpkins are ready for harvest and then carved for Halloween, and other orange foods like squash and sweet potatoes are in season. Sitting around an orange campfire or lighting one in the fireplace when it's cold outside is not only cozy and provides warmth, but it's easy to be mesmerized by the dancing flames. 8/18/2023 0 Comments Bose soundlink revolve plus reviewThe battery life of the Bose Revolve+ has never been a problem. In terms of volume, the Bose is clearly louder than the JBL Charge 3 and even slightly louder than the JBL Extreme, which I think is very clever considering the size. What is a big difference is that the Bose has a much clearer sound than the JBL speakers, which makes the JBL speakers sound a bit 'dull'. Now I have to say that the JBL Charge 3 and Extreme have more bass even at high volume where the Bose Revolve+ falls just a bit short in my opinion. Because other friends of mine also have a battery speaker, I tested it against the JBL Charge 3 and the JBL Extreme. Also outside on the bike, the speaker goes loud enough that the group you cycle with, everyone can enjoy the music.īecause I am proud of the speaker and want to show it to everyone, I took it to school. Filling a room with sounds is no problem either. This speaker can be wonderfully soft and nice and loud. If you like what you see here and want to help me keep it going, please consider donating via the PayPal Contribute button below. Background music in my bedroom or a swinging song in the kitchen. It doesn’t have the low end response the Revolve+ does but it does generally sound more neutral (as neutral as a speaker like this can be). However, at lower levels where the bass does not need to be limited, I prefer the sound of the Apple HomePod Mini. For the extra $70 or so, I’d get the Revolve+. Easier than using the Apple HomePod Mini. Connection to both units is quick and extremely easy. The bass is fuller (a bit too full at low volumes but some may like this). It gets louder without suffering (as much) distortion. I find the Revolve+ to be the better speaker overall. But as volume increases, the limiter kicks in and lowers the bass output on both units. Even when switching back and forth with music shows this to be the case even at the same volume. The response of the Revolve+ is clearly boosted on the low end. Both speakers implement limiting to keep from blowing the speaker.Max SPL is 84dB 1m (SoundLink Revolve) and 88dB 1m (SoundLink Revolve+). However, the Revolve+ is capable of higher output. You can clearly see a built-in limiter is used to keep from overpowering and blowing the speaker. An example of this can be seen below from my Apple HomePod Mini test. This was done to make sure there was no artifacts - comb filtering - from the stand back to the microphone as this is intended to provide anechoic data, as previously discussed. I modified the NFS to use a pole, placing the speaker on top rather than directly on top of the NFS’ platform. So there was nothing to disable in terms of “DSP”. The speaker was measured fresh out of the box with no additional settings enabled (if they even exist). Volume set to max and signal was applied via the Aux Input. With the above said, the reference plane in this test is at the waveguide level. The goal of this review is to answer some basic questions: 1) What is the difference between the two versions, 2) what is the sound radiation characteristic and 3) which one gets louder. In other words, most will be listening to this while moving about the home or as background music but I can’t imagine many attempting to use a SoundLink Revolve for “critical listening”. Given that this is a device that is less about “ideal listening conditions” and more about “convenience”, I am less interested in the absolute accuracy of the frequency response and more interested in the radiation pattern and the maximum SPL limits. The former has 12 hours battery life while the Revolve+ has 16 hours battery life.Ĭurrent MSRP for the Revolve is $180 USD and $250 USD for the Revolve+. The standard SoundLink Revolve is smaller and weighs about 0.50 lbs. Mechanically, the differences are in size and weight. The design of these speakers are intended to provide 360° sound throughout the room and does so using a “fullrange” drive-unit with a waveguide paired with a set of passive radiators to provide the lower frequency content. The Bose SoundLink Revolve and Revolve+ are Bluetooth speakers. Moreso, this is information for those who prefer “just the facts” and prefer to have the data without the filler.įor a primer on what the data means, please watch my series of videos where I provide in-depth discussion and examples of how to read the graphics presented hereon. Once fruits are harvested, remove the plants from the garden to prevent any fungal spores from overwintering and becoming a problem in future years. Pumpkins can be stored in a cool, dry place for several months, depending on variety and sugar content. Once stems harden, fruits are ready for harvest using a set of pruning shears. Stem hardness is also an indication of fruit maturity. They should be harvested when plants die back and the fruits obtain their full color. Pumpkins are a crop that will produce a one-time harvest at the end of the growing season. During periods of heavy rainfall, using a fungicide like Liquid Copper can help to alleviate disease pressure as well. As a result, we recommend using drip irrigation on winter squash to reduce plant moisture and feed plants more effectively. Pumpkins can be susceptible to plant diseases like downy mildew and powdery mildew if leaves receive excess moisture. Once plants emerge, thin plants to one every 2 feet. Offering a simulation game, it’s easy for us to get inspiration – we just need to look out of the window into the real farming world. On the other hand, there is technical improvement through our own GIANTS engine. The first steps for a new iteration are two-folded – on one hand, we discuss long feature wishlists, based on our own opinions and user feedback. Therefore, we don’t have to start from scratch, instead, we build upon an existing framework. It varied depending on platforms, as mobile platforms are less powerful than PCs or consoles, but at the bottom line, we continuously expanded the Farming Simulator universe step by step. Including DLCs, we have released new Farming Simulator content every year since 2008. Productive and direct communication is guaranteed through frequent discussions and project-based chat groups. Everyone is invited to get involved in all ongoing topics, which are organized via online planning tools. Next to various regular meetings (needless to say that those are online most of the time), our passionate employees regularly come up with fresh ideas. Obviously, all those topics are interwoven in many ways and we cultivate a very open-minded working environment. In the Czech Republic, we focus on vehicle and machine design, while the vehicle animation and gameplay integration are developed in Germany QA testing and marketing and communication are also done in the Erlangen office. There are different tasks and departments settled at our four locations, the GIANTS engine is done in our Headquarters in Switzerland, same as map design and relationships with manufacturers. We are all one big team, working together to maintain and nurture the Farming Simulator universe. Since then, we have grown tremendously and opened new offices in Erlangen, Germany, Brno, Czechia, and most recently Chicago, USA. We established the company in Zurich, Switzerland, in 2004 and launched the first Farming Simulator in 2008. 8/17/2023 0 Comments Solomon quest 4 gtxr/Highpointers <- Peak bagging the highest point in all 50 states! r/Snowshoeing <- Keep the hiking adventures going all year round! r/AdventurePhotography <- Another resource for adventure/outdoor/hiking related photos. r/WildernessBackpacking <- General discussion of multiday backpacking in wilderness areas r/Ultralight <- Ultralight gear discussions, a great resource for saving weight (and your back) r/Outdoors <- Outdoor recreation: keeping humans fit, fed and happy for thousands of years. r/NationalPark <- Dedicated to discussions and information about the US National Park system. r/Hammocks <- Lightweight tent alternatives! r/CampingGear <- General discussion board for camping gear, though not necessarily focused on hiking/backpacking r/CampingandHiking <- For multiday camping/hiking trips r/Bushcraft <- Techniques, history, and discussion of traditional survival skills r/Backpacking <-For travel backpackers (largely international) Summit of Half-Dome, Yosemite National Park, California, USAĪll photos must be your own Original Content Related Subreddits If posting a picture/video you must use this format in the title: Please remember to practice good reddiquette, we are all here out of a love of the outdoors! Early Improvements to Browning's Automatic Rifle It was adopted for Army and Marine Corps infantry in 1941, and it remained standard through WWII and as long after that as the BAR remained in service. The second approach involved a new, larger infantry platoon with four twelve-man squads, each with its own BAR team.Įxtensive troop testing proved the twelve-man squad was tactically superior. One was an infantry platoon with three eight-man rifle squads and a fourth eight-man squad with three BAR teams that was standard at the end of the 1930s. By the end of the 1930s, two structures had been developed. Existing models were converted back to regular BARs.Īll through the 1920s and 1930s, our Army worked on finding the best way to integrate the Browning Automatic Rifle into the infantry organization. This model was specifically for use with horse-mounted cavalry, and it became obsolete before World War II. It was nothing more than a slightly heavier BAR with a finned barrel, bipod, and buttrest. 30 Browning Machine Rifle M1922,” at the request of the Cavalry Board. Army adopted a modified BAR known as the “Cal. The Poles also built an experimental 8mm infantry rifle based on the BAR design, which they never placed in production. Poland also bought a license to build the BAR in the 1920s, and their army used them in 8mm as the Model 28. In the late 1930s they introduced an improved model with a quick-change barrel as their M37 BAR. The Swedish government also bought a license to build BARs in 1920, and their army adopted it as the M21 in their 6.5mm. 30-06 caliber was used by the Belgian army, and the Egyptian army bought a number in 8mm Mauser caliber. Army never considered necessary or desirable. FN of Belgium built it as their Model 30 and sold them to Belgian, Chilean, Chinese and other armies in limited numbers.Īfter World War II, FN reintroduced their BAR as the improved Model D with a quick-change barrel, something the U.S. In the 1920s, Browning licensed foreign manufacturers to build the BAR. Colt also built a special law enforcement “Monitor” version of the BAR and sold a few of them. The calibers included 6.5mm, 7mm and 8mm Mauser. Neither of these projects continued after the end of WWI.Īt the end of that war, the BAR manufacturing rights reverted to Colt, and they manufactured BARs in the 1920s and 1930s for export military sales. The French also considered adopting it in 30-06 caliber. The Army's WWI combat success of the BAR caused the British to consider adopting it, and they tested a version in their 303 rifle caliber. The BAR 1918A1 is a 1930s improvement with prone-fire enhancement in mind. At that point, Winchester had built 47,123 Marlin-Rockwell, 39,002 and Colt, 16,000. Some 102,125 BARs were built during WWI, and about half of them were delivered after the end of the war. The BAR saw relatively little combat in World War I, but it proved its worth beyond any doubt, so much so that it was one of the very few weapons kept in production after the end of World War I. This mode also kept the weapon from overheating. Short bursts were easily fired by simply pulling and releasing the BAR's trigger quickly. Longer full-automatic bursts were inaccurate and a waste of ammunition. It could be fired in its semi-automatic manner, but it was found to be most effective firing short three- or four-round full-automatic bursts. However, the BAR was a very accurate weapon, particularly when fired from any handy rest. The 18-pound WWI Model 1918 Browning Automatic Rifle fired from an open bolt, and the forward movement of the bolt caused some aim disturbance. In addition, the WWI BAR magazine belt provided a special pocket for the butt of the BAR which was used when firing from the hip in the “assault position.” It was fired from the same prone, sitting, kneeling and standing positions as a regular infantry rifle. Teaching a soldier to use and care for a BAR was not difficult. This organization did not go into use because there weren't enough BARs or BAR men. At the end of the war, plans were being made to enlarge the BAR platoon so there would be one BAR for each eight-man rifle squad. In combat, one BAR squad was assigned to each rifle platoon. One of these was converted to a BAR platoon of three squads with two BAR sections each. Army WWI rifle company consisted of four rifle platoons. Machine guns were regimental weapons in World War I, but the BAR became a company weapon. |
